Cognex Enters Into OEM Agreement with Samsung Worth Over $1 Million

Cognex Corporation

NATICK, MA, August 21, 2000 -- Cognex Corporation (NASDAQ: CGNX), the world's leading supplier of machine vision systems, has entered into an OEM agreement with Samsung Techwin, a leading manufacturer of capital equipment for the semiconductor, digital imaging, aviation, and defense industries, and a fast-growing division of Samsung, one of the largest corporations in Korea.

Under the agreement, Samsung is expected to purchase approximately $1.25 Million worth of Cognex machine vision systems over the next two years.  The Cognex vision systems will be used in wire bonders-automated machines that guide the connection of ultra-thin wires from semiconductor dies to leadframes.  The Cognex systems automatically determine where the connections between the die and the leadframe are to be made and then communicate that information to the wire bonder.

'As a long-time Cognex customer, we again selected Cognex for its high-performance, robust software solutions,' said Jung-Duk Kim, General Manager of Samsung Techwin.  'The superior ability of Cognex machine vision systems to locate items at any angle or magnification has helped our customers better meet the challenges of today's semiconductor manufacturing processes.'

Formerly called Samsung Aerospace Industries, Korea-based Samsung Techwin is a division of Samsung International, one of the world's leading high technology companies.  Samsung Techwin is an international manufacturer concentrating on semiconductor systems, optics and digital imaging, engines and turbo machinery, defense-related programs, and aviation.

Cognex Corporation designs, develops, manufactures, and markets machine vision systems, or computers that can 'see.'  Cognex is the world's leader in the machine vision industry, having shipped more than 100,000 machine vision systems, representing over $1 Billion in cumulative revenue, since the company's founding in 1981.  Cognex's Modular Vision Systems Division, headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts, specializes in machine vision systems which are used for automating the manufacture of a wide range of discrete items and for assuring their quality.  Cognex's Surface Inspection Systems Division, headquartered in Alameda, California, specializes in machine vision systems which are used for inspecting the surfaces of products manufactured in a continuous fashion, such as metals, paper, and plastics.  In addition to its corporate headquarters in Natick, Massachusetts, Cognex also has regional offices located throughout North America, Japan, Europe, and Southeast Asia.  Visit Cognex on-line at http://www.cognex.com.
