HALCON Embedded Ported to Cameras with ARM Processors

Vision Components GmbH

VC Z Smart Cameras are now available with HALCON Embedded for efficient application developmentUniversal machine vision functions now on any VC Z Smart Camera
Ettlingen – ARM-based Z series Smart Cameras from Vision Components are now available with user-friendly standard software for all machine vision applications: HALCON Embedded, featuring an integrated development environment and a comprehensive library for blob analysis, morphology, matching, measuring, identification, and much more, has been successfully ported to the new camera models. Users can comfortably develop applications on the PC and then export them to the Vision Components Smart Cameras, which run a Linux operating system. Available hardware options include a variety of sensors, processors, and interfaces.

The current version HALCON 12.0.1 enables significant speed increases and offers new features that facilitate application development. Optical character recognition (OCR) capabilities have been enhanced to ensure high recognition rates and reduce the need for parameter adjustments: the software is able to read characters of any size and distinguish text from the background even under challenging conditions, such as distorted characters. Message queues for inter-thread communication were added, as well as a whole range of new operators for bead inspection. Additional software interfaces facilitate further processing of data. HALCON tuples or iconic variables can now be verified directly in Visual Studio. In HDevelop, vector variables can be processed and tuples can be visualized as 1D or 2D plots from the variable window. In code-reading applications, potentially interfering edges outside the actual bar code are more effectively ignored. The recognition and processing of blurred or out-of-focus images of EAN-13/UPC-A bar codes has been improved, and 2/5 interleaved codes are detected with a higher tolerance for print growth, print loss, and overexposure.

VC Kameras groupAbout Vision Components
Founded in 1996 by Michael Engel, inventor of the first intelligent camera for industrial applications, Vision Components GmbH is a leading supplier in the field of machine vision. Branches and distributors represent the Ettlingen-based company worldwide in more than 25 countries. Vision Components develops and distributes intelligent, network-compatible real-time Smart Cameras which are able to operate without a PC. These embedded vision solutions can be easily integrated into almost any machine or plant. Customers can choose between models with ARM processors and VC Linux firmware or DSP-based models with the proprietary VCRT operating system. The product portfolio includes Smart Cameras with or without a protective housing, single board cameras, and vision sensors. Vision Components also develops custom-tailored machine vision solutions for a wide range of applications. Amongst others, typical applications include quality inspection and automation. Furthermore, VC provides free software libraries for many applications including license plate recognition, motion capture, decoding, measurement, and positioning.

About HALCON
HALCON is the comprehensive standard software for machine vision with an integrated development environment (IDE) that is used worldwide. It enables cost savings and improved time to market: HALCON’s flexible architecture facilitates rapid development of machine vision, medical imaging, and image analysis applications. HALCON provides outstanding performance and a comprehensive support of multi-core platforms and special instructions sets like AVX2, as well as GPU acceleration. With HALCON Embedded the software can also be ported to and used on customer-specific platforms. It serves all industries, with a library used in tens of thousands of applications in all areas of imaging like blob analysis, morphology, matching, measuring, identification, and 3D vision. HALCON secures investments by supporting a wide range of operating systems and providing interfaces to hundreds of industrial cameras and frame grabbers, also for standards like GenICam, GigE Vision, and USB3 Vision.
