Full Vision Inspection Solution Inspects Bottle LabelsReckitt Benckiser implemented a vision inspection solution to verify presence of front and back labels and cap integrity on its French’s mustard bottles. The system was designed to accurately inspect unoriented products. This eliminated the need for additional equipment or manual inspectors to orient and inspect each bottle.
Previously, Reckitt Benckiser relied on manual inspection to detect and reject French’s bottles that had defective or missing labels. In spite of their experience and familiarity with the French’s brand, manual inspectors were not as accurate and untiring as a machine vision system. With the implementation of a new full vision solution, inspections for label presence and quality, cap presence and positioning as well as date code correctness and readability are now possible at high line speeds without fatigue or loss of accuracy over time. Their need for manual inspection was totally eliminated, thus saving significant costs and improving productivity. The vision solution is installed directly after the labeler; however when entering the system the bottles are not oriented. Therefore, the software has to be aware of which side of the bottle, front or back, the cameras are viewing. Using a remote camera station prior to entering the vision system, the camera verifies and communicates the correct bottle orientation to the software so it can be inspected accurately. Once the software confirms whether it is viewing a front or back label, it then performs code inspections for date and lot codes, as well as label inspections to ensure the product is branded as intended.
Following installation, the system has virtually eliminated customer complaints due to defective packages reaching retailer shelves, has eliminated the labor cost of human inspectors and provides plant managers with useful statistical feedback on capping and label issues that continually lead to improved line
productivity.
