How do I go about selecting a wavelength of light to improve detection on a white surface. With white light in near darkfield I get a specular reaction from the surface.

I need to illuminate an object in a field of view of 20mmX25mm into a box with a white source vertically. The system will include a CCD camera pointing down to the target to realize a contrast measurement. I was thinking of using a white ring LED but I need to have the source stable, uniform. I know that white LED have a blue peak in the spectrum which cause non uniformity color rending. Could you advise of any alternative for the light source? Thanks.
